  1. Super Robot Wars is the ONLY one to get a pass because even tho its just dialogue with portraits, they actually care about making a good crossover story thats fun and creative and true to each series

  5. Question: What do you think sets apart story modes in say a "Tales Of" game, (or any other JRPG that doesn't have source material,) from stories like Fairy Tale ?

    I wonder this only because, a lot of the earlier tales games I've played have a lot of in-engine cutscenes, fillery side quests, etc, but those are still enjoyable, so I wonder what captivates people to playing these other JRPGS.

  6. I'm glad you made this video because I'm one of those guys that LOOVES, I mean LOVES playing the story mode. Even if I haven't watched the source material beforehand. I always want to see how a game can present the story of its source material. Storm 2 and forward managed to excel the already great first half of Shippuden, giving weight to the famous moments while adding new ways to enjoy the fights. The Boss battles are proof of this. They gave a new flare to those battles and made any newcomer feel those moments of excitement along when the sad moments come.

    Which pains me whenever a bad story mode comes and does THE BARE MINIMUM with what they have. I'm one of the few people that extremely dislike the KLK if's story mode for how little it did to present itself along with adding mechanics that worked in the past, but they don't because of how unpolished they are. The cover battles, in concept they sound awesome with how powerful Ryuko and Satsuki are in the anime. In execution, they are set as overly expanded normal battle with only more opponents to worry about, and the camera not giving you enough vision to react properly. It stops being fun and becomes annoying. And don't get me started on the boss battles. No health bar to keep an eye on, just a montage of beating it up with nothing to be excited about. My hero's one justice. Dual Story mode? Great idea. They present them in comic panels with little to no time to get invested once more in the characters? Not a great execution with almost no variety in the fights.

    But the worst part about it is the entire story feels dry and lacks the heart the anime has. My Hero's one justice, and KLK if are guilty of doing nothing unique with their respective stories. And when they do, they don't have the umf they are supposed to have. The final battle against Overlord, and the battle against the Life fiber Baby. Those are supposed to feel big, intimidating, and awe-inducing. But they don't. I'm not asking for high-quality cutscenes like the Storm series. I'm asking that they present the story as they are proud to tell it and willing to present it the best way possible. Not as an afterthought.

  7. If you are working on Anime games with original stories, add Fist of the North Star:Lost Paradise on the list and it's one of the only anime licensed game not made by Bandai Namco.

  9. My favorite was definitely the Naruto Storm series. The animation, the cutscenes and the battles were simply AMAZING.

  10. I never really enjoyed Dbz because of the exaggeration in fights. Once I played fighterz and did the story. I actually got hooked on it. Learning a lot about the series and how funny it really was. So now it actually gave me the incentive to watch DragonBall super.

  11. My favorite anime game with a direct anime story is Cory in the House, especially that one fight in the story where Cory fights Goku and Cell at the same time.

    Joking aside, in all honesty, the SAO games. I like how they match the anime well with it's real-time combat, adventure, and Kirito's overall OP'ness. 2nd would be the Ultimate Ninja Storm series. A set of games that have incredibly well done animations and fight scenes interwined in them directly from the series. I would mention DBZ, but it's been abused so much that I don't really care for it nowadays. There's more, but we'll leave it like this.

Hmmm I think i really enjoyed the storm games because the fights sometimes changed like the Naruto vs Saskue fight in the final valley they changed the cut scenes and they changed the way they fought which was really cool in my opinion because it was different even if i already know the outcome

  16. I usually go into anime games not expecting a whole lot. But every time there's a character line that's just a grunt but otherwise mute I die a little on the inside. Either voice the line or dont. Kakarot was the most random about this in my experience.

  18. i think cutscenes can be fixed by just having them in a fixed in environment so no 2d sprites no akward transitions, just play the scenes out in the current world en move the camera back and forth from and to the players character depending on the situation. some Games that did this well are marvel's Sipderman and monster hunter. they show you an intro cutscene for a new character, good now you know what your facing, monster roars at you, you are standing there and the camera immediately pans back the player perspective.

  20. Playing the anime story mode for me is a way for me to experience what the characters were going through during those moments. But that depends on whether or not the developers execute this right. An example of this is DBZ BT3. They pull this off in many great ways. My favourite one is when they let you play as the villain and give him all kinds of buffs. This gives you an idea of how the Z-Fighters you were cheering for during that fight were feeling, the stress, the fear, sense of powerlessness. At the same time, it drives it home just how powerful the villain was and lets you experience that power by playing as them.

  22. Asura’s Wrath comes to mind when it comes to a great anime story mode. The game forces you to interact, even during cutscenes, cause its all quick time events. But at the same time, those quicktime events aren’t made to be tedious, but to further exaggerate the emotions of the story and help push it forward. And there is no “low-budget” cutscenes too, everything is in-engine and it looks and feels amazing to watch and play.

  24. Technically storm 3 was ahead of the anime as well, that was before we first saw KCM 2 Naruto in the anime

    Kakarot when trying as well, you can see the well animated effort, it makes it amazing to re-do the plot for the 40th time.

    but even the greatest anime games have these slow, static model talking moments
    I want them to do more. Kakarot tries alittle more here where some more motion is put in, but its not enough

    One of my favorite anime games from cutscenes alone, is Budokai 1, because it made an effort to do more than just 'make a game'

    Taking anime screenshots, or static images, are the worst kinds (Looking at One's Justice or J-Stars Victory Vs +)
    Personally I wish we'd get different types of games as well, instead of hack n' slash or arena fighters.
    Like an RPG, a well animated cutscene MHA or Jump Cross-Over JRPG? fuck yeah
    Its honestly, if you ask me, what Jump Force should of been, a game that puts the plot first, gives a good contextual reason for the Jump Heroes to be there, and you can make the players feel special by animating their specials, so each one stands out.

  28. I really liked dragon ball fighter Z's story with the introduction of a brand new character and well animated cutscenes even tho the link system is over explained, it just shows a new side of goku that you don't really see in the anime

  30. In kakarot there was no fight in the tournament because no one that is playable did fight in the anime

  34. I didnt watch dbz i played dbz kakarot for like 40 hours in Total and i got most of the story in dbz
    I litteraly loved the game

  37. Storm 1 wasn't that great in my opinion if I'm being all that honest. Don't get me wrong, animations were still baller, but the story mode in Storm 1 was a *slog*. I had more fun running around the Leaf than I did doing missions. However 2-4 is the most optimal way to experience Shippiden and nobody can change my mind

  40. Xenoverse 1's story mode is better than 2's, the CG has more effort too, you keep your transformation during CG which is extremely cool looking.

  41. 4:03 I mean yes , the story is boring but the entertaining thing of it is the interactions between some characters . Like for example gotenks and ginyu or adult gohan and perfect cell , those were cool

  44. never understood why games telling the anime stories dont use the actual anime as cutscenes for certain scenes. Like certain points need to be gameplay but like nobody is gonna care if youre playing an anime game and anime is playing

  45. Just to clarify, youre not explicitly against low budgeted cutscenes, but if the cutscenes are low budgeted they shouldn’t dominate the gameplay time. So instead of just paraphrasing the story mode or setting up subsequent battle, developers need to figure out clever ways with the limited budget to involve the player in more than just cutscenes and battles. Clash of Ninja is low budgeted with some variety in battles (at least since Revolution). Storm has great cutscenes, but (other than Storm 2), boss battles were not super varying. Rise of a Ninja had some really cool story features.
